内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Purpose
The purpose of this study was to describe the experience of nurses caring for adolescent cancer patients and their families, while the adolescents had not being told the truth such as precise physical condition and prognosis.
Methods
The participants were three nurses in child and family nursing who experienced those cases.
Date were collected by using semi-structured interviews and analyzed qualitatively to give meaning to the experience.
Results
All the adolescents were not being told the truth because the families did not wish to do so.
The results indicated three themes as follows. 1) Nurses showed understanding and valued families' wish of "not want to tell". At the same time, they questioned about families' decision, but not talked with families about their decision making process and feelings. 2) While they realized it is
better to tell the truth, nurses tried to face with adolescents and their families. As the result, nurses
felt a burden and reluctance. 3) Nurses tried to make themselves agreeable to considering what was the best choice and not recommending the truth telling.
Conclusions
The findings suggest two things as follows. 1) Nurses need to discuss with parents about their decision making process and their intension of not telling the truth. Nurses should be encouraged to have a voice and to give a message to families and other professionals about their thoughts and opinions, based on their own experience. 2) It is necessary for the nurse to be understood their feelings and thoughts and to have long-term mental support.
