| 内容記述 | Based on responses collected through individual interviews with truck drivers concerning lumbago caused by loading and driving trucks, an objective was set to pursue characteristics of their back pain experiences as well as preventive behaviors. The information that was gathered from their responses can be summarized into three main points, work environment causing lumbago, various ways that these individuals deal with the pain of lumbago, and divergence of understanding about health management. A major factor in the cause of truck driver backaches seems to be the environment which forces them their repetitive loading work in a confined space restricting their freedom of movement. The drivers generally take a fatalistic approach in that, "It hurts no matter what and nothing can be done." And they also seem to demonstrate a strong sense of viewing this as their own individual problem without any efforts to exchange such information with other drivers. Reflecting on their past experiences as truck drivers and being well aware of their back pain problems, they also spoke about personal characteristics which lead one to the occupational choice of being a truck driver. One of these characteristics is the tendency to regard human relations as a nuisance. They were not necessarily uninterested in other drivers because they did show some thoughtfulness towards them. And many of them shared the same experience of finding this type of work as suitable for them after repeatedly changing previous jobs. Additionally, most of them accepted the lumbago as "part of the job" and continued to work regardless of the pain as long as it was bearable and not life threatening. One could conclude that their health consciousness and behavioral responses to their health situation were shaped by their tendency to choose truck driving as an occupation, one in which they load their trucks in small spaces where movements are limited, and spend many hours driving in a small and enclosed spaces combined with a distinctive condition where they work alone. The aggregate responses of the truck drivers suggest that it is important for occupational health nurse to provide supports based on an overall understanding of them as individuals as well as the inherent hazards of their occupation. It is essential to consider the balance between the truck-driving work and health and to understand the characteristics of an individual who chooses this type of occupation. With such knowledge and understanding, the next step should be in approaching the entire organizations within companies including their management to develop a better understanding that the productivity of truck drivers can be improved by allowing them to work under conditions that enhance their physical and mental well-being. |
