内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The purpose of the present study was to describe the ways in which patients who had undergone emergency hospitalization and treatment after being notified of the diagnosis of acute leukemia perceived their illness and treatment, as well as the feelings they experienced during treatment.
Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and participant observation for a total of three patients in stable condition who had undergone emergency hospitalization and treatment after being notified of the diagnosis of acute leukemia. The psychology and behavior of subjects were analyzed by focusing on context. The present study was approved by the ethics review board of the Japanese Red Cross College of Nursing.
The feelings of subjects after notification included shock, confusion, anxiety, frustration, and helplessness. In order to control their feelings and understand the rationale for treatment, subjects made efforts to better understand their illness and treatment by obtaining information. However, they found it difficult to find information and to gain an understanding of their illness and treatment. In addition, subjects were concerned that the medical staff did not understand their complex feelings, which included anxiety and frustration. These concerns further aggravated the subjects' feelings of anxiety and frustration, and contributed to subjects having doubts about their diagnosis and treatment. In order to undergo treatment while dealing with these feelings, subjects focused on maintaining their remission status and continuing treatment, and underwent treatment by managing to cope with their feelings. In addition, encouragement from family and the presence of family itself served as emotional support for subjects during treatment. Furthermore, subjects desired encouragement from medical staff as well, and felt that such encouragement would make them feel supported in their struggle with illness rather than going through it alone.
