内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Research Purpose: To reveal experiences of breathlessness in elderly patients with mild to moderate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Research Method: A qualitative descriptive research method was used. Participants comprised 3 patients more than 65-years-old with mild to moderate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Data were collected in a semi-structured interview regarding experiences of breathlessness. When an agreement was obtained, interviews were tape recorded, and a verbatim record was created. In data analysis, the verbatim record was perused and interpreted based on meanings constructed by the participants. Regarding validity of the interpretation, probability was secured under supervision from a research supervisor. Subject anonymity was maintained in all research stages.
Data collection was performed upon confirming that no participants were physically stressed.
Result: From talks with 3 participants, the following 3 themes were extracted: "an encounter with 'breathlessness' as part of a series of experiences due to a disease"; "'breathlessness' as an experience ignored during daily life"; and "a presence of recollections forming the core of 'breathlessness'". Experiences of breathlessness were found to be extremely uncertain and ignored during daily life for elderly patients with mild to moderate COPD, and that a life-threatening crisis due to severe respiratory distress was being faced when the individual became aware of breathlessness. We also observed that participants recalled previous painful experiences while experiencing breathlessness. They were certain about such interpretations, and talked about these issues in a convincing way. Conversely, patients were confused when talking about recent changes in physical symptoms and events that were difficult to be interpret.
